Why this maker, in particular
There are dozens of word search generators online. Most of them either show ads on the printable, gate the answer key behind a signup, or render PDFs that scale badly on Letter and A4. Here is what we did differently.
One-click placement
Our placer uses a randomized backtracking algorithm. It tries the densest words first, then fills the gaps. If a word truly cannot fit, you get a clear error instead of a silently dropped word.
PDFs that print
Letter and A4 friendly. The grid uses a high-contrast monospace stack, the word list flows into multiple columns automatically, and the optional answer key prints on its own page.
Share without an app
Each puzzle gets a permanent URL like puzzletide.com/word-search/your-puzzle. Drop the link into Google Classroom, a WhatsApp chat, or a wedding RSVP page and people just play.
Safe for classrooms
Word lists are auto-moderated for profanity and personal data (phone numbers, email addresses) before publishing. A lightweight honeypot stops bots without slowing down real users.
Accessibility built in
The play page supports a dyslexic-friendly font, large-letter mode, and high-contrast and paper themes. Touch targets pass WCAG sizing on phones, and the grid is fully keyboard navigable.
Latin-script multilingual
Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian, German, Catalan, Romanian, Polish, and other Latin-script languages work out of the box. Accents are normalized so 'piñata' becomes a clean PINATA in the grid.
How difficulty actually changes the puzzle
Same word list, very different solving experience. The grid below shows every direction the placer will use at each level.
Five directions a word can hide
- Forward (PLAY): left-to-right across a row. Default in Easy.
- Down (HUNT): top-to-bottom down a column. Default in Easy.
- Diagonal (FUN): top-left to bottom-right. Unlocked in Medium.
- Bottom-to-top (WORD): vertical, reversed. Unlocked in Hard.
- Backward (EMAG ⇒ GAME): right-to-left across a row. Unlocked in Hard.

How to make a word search in 5 steps
From an empty form to a printable PDF in about two minutes.

Pick a game type
Word Search is selected by default. Crossword, Sudoku, and Hangman appear with a Coming Soon badge while the makers for those formats are in development.

Add a title and (optional) category
Titles like "5th Grade Animals" or "Sarah's Birthday Party" travel well in classrooms and group chats. Picking a category puts the puzzle into our public library; leaving it blank keeps the URL unlisted.

Paste your word list
Use commas or one word per line. Both work. We strip spaces, hyphens, and accents, so "ice cream", "ice-cream", and "icecream" all become the same 8-letter entry.

Choose a difficulty
Easy: forward placement only. Medium: forward + diagonal. Hard: every direction including backward. Difficulty controls placement only. The words themselves are yours.

Generate, print, share
Click Generate. You land on a play page with a permanent URL. From there, click Print for the PDF, toggle the answer key on or off, and copy the link to share.

What we learned after generating ~3,000 puzzles
We built this maker because we needed it ourselves. PuzzleTide's team has been seeding the public library puzzle by puzzle since early 2025, and the quirks add up fast. A few of the things that surprised us:
- Word lists with one outlier wreck the grid. A 13-letter word among 9 short ones forces the placer into a corner. Either trim the long one or pad the rest, and the grid relaxes immediately.
- Hard mode is harder than you think on paper. On a phone, swiping a backward diagonal is fine. On a printed page, kids quickly tire of hunting for
EMAGwhen they expectedGAME. For grades 1 to 4, default to Medium. - Themed lists outperform vocabulary lists. “Things in a kitchen” gets solved 30% faster than a random spelling list of the same length, because solvers can predict what they're looking for.
- Print preview is the real QA. We never publish a puzzle without printing it once at 100% scaling. About 1 in 20 PDFs needs the word list reflowed because a long compound word punches through the column.

Word lists that actually work
The single biggest predictor of a fun word search is the list, not the grid. A quick checklist before you click Generate.
Do
- Stick to a single theme so solvers can predict the next word
- Mix word lengths; aim for roughly 4 to 10 letters with 1 or 2 longer anchors
- Use uppercase or lowercase consistently, not a mix
- Hand the list to one other person for a sanity read before publishing
- Test-print at 100% scale to catch column overflow
Avoid
- Mixing related words that share a stem (e.g., RUN, RUNS, RUNNER); they hide inside each other
- Multi-word phrases over 14 letters once spaces are stripped
- Inside jokes or proper nouns the audience will not recognize
- 15+ words longer than 10 letters in a 12×12 grid
- Pasting from a PDF without checking for invisible characters

- PDFs are A4 and US Letter friendly. Set scaling to 100%, not “Fit to page”.
- Toggle the answer key off if you're handing the puzzle to students; toggle it on for your records.
- Black-and-white printer? The grid uses pure black on white, no thin tints that vanish.

A note on privacy
The maker does not require an account. We don't ask for an email, a name, or a password. Generated puzzles are public by default at their unique URL (that's how share links work), but they aren't crawlable in search if you skip the category. The full policy is on our privacy page.
